Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

For this side of the border this is about as good as it gets. Another reviewer said it was "uncomfortably authentic," which to someone who has not spent much time in Mexico nor speaks any Spanish would probably agree. This place is phenomenal and a must stop in OKC's burgeoning Hispanic District. They have tacos of all types; asada, lengua, you name it. They also have the mother of all Mexican dishes: Pozole! Unfortunately, I can't attest to the goodness of the Pozole as it is only served at special times and I have unfortunately never been there for that but that is about as authentic a Mexican dish as you can get. A nice bonus is also the pasteleria that is in the same building that serves the greatest of all Mexican beverages - licuadaos! Treat yourself and indulge in some tacos and then get a freshly prepared licuado or a malteada and don't be intimidated if you don't speak Spanish, the staff is very friendly and helpful. This place has been rated as one of El Nacional's (Oklahoma City's Spanish Newspaper) "Lo Mejor" (The Best) for several years in a row as well.

Great for OKC standards, but coming from California, my standards are higher. The carnitas tacos are my favorite and the jimyca (I know I spelled that wrong) drink is the better than I have had before. I would definitely come back here and order some other items!

Taqueria Los Desvelados just might be the best Taqueria in OKC! This place has everything you could ever want in a Taqueria, including drunken Mexican dudes painted all over the exterior. Ha! This eatery has tacos, refried beans, tostadas, sopes, gorditas, tortas, burritos, flautas, enchiladas, and even licuados! (milk & fruit smoothie) One thing I really appreciate about this place's menu is that it translates the different meats in plain English next to the Spanish name (see menu photo). The taco's are excellent and come with cilantro and onions on two small corn tortillas with your choice of meat. This place has a large selection of meats too (including fish and tripas), the asada and lengua at this restaurant are especially good. The tacos are priced just right, only $1.50 each, and they arrive hot at your table along with complimentary limes, jalapenos, carrots, garlic, green salsa, and red salsa (the green salsa is my favorite). The tostada's are excellent as well, they come with refried beans, your choice of meat (I recommend the chorizo), lettuce, tomato, white cheese, and sour cream. Another thing that makes this place better than other Taqueria's is it's beverage selection, which includes beer! They have Mexican or domestic beer or choose from imported Coca-Cola in a glass bottle, a variety of Jarritos bottled fruit sodas, fountain fruit drinks, and others as well. But I highly recommend the Licuados! The licuados smoothies are whipped up in the restaurant's other half. Yes they have a separate room dedicated to making licuados and fruit desserts (they have ice cream too). The licuados are created with fresh fruit, frozen milk, nestle chocolate powder, cinnamon, and a little sugar too. These super tasty licuados will fill up any extra space left in your stomach after eating all those tacos. But be sure to order the smaller size licuado, trust me on this, because otherwise you might explode and nobody wants to clean that up. Another thing that makes this place cool is the variety of seating options, one of which include big comfy leather chairs that have Taqueria Los Desvelados's name branded on them. This place is open from 9am-3am, so there's no excuse not to go. They except credit cards ($5 minimum). The owners are friendly and they even have their own commercial on YouTube! How cool is that! Watch it here: youtube.com/watch?v=hKO3… . I highly recommend this Taqueria because the food is excellent and again, they have things you won't find at most other Taqueria's (i.e. Re-fried beans, Beer, and Licuados). I have to go now, I'm drooling...

I really love this place. They have the best tacos in the US I have ever had. I usually gobble up the carrots and peppers first that come with the meal. I have only tried the tacos. I understand that their goat soup is good too. The asada is kick ass but I am fod of the tongue too. It is very tender. I really enjoy the Horchata because it's not over-sweetened and has really good flavor. Yum!!!

This is one of the better taquerias in town. You can get good food late at night and enjoy it with a cold beer. Prices aren't bad, and the service is good - even when it's busy.

Excellent carne asada tacos. Just fantastic! The corn tortillas were the best I ever had as well. For $2.00 a piece these tacos are good size, bigger than your average taco truck taco. The chips that came out with the salsa and cheese dip were amazing as well! The downside was the salsa and cheese dip. I am a salsa connoisseur and I believe this salsa lacked flavor and was very water downed. It needed some salt and lime badly which I added and helped. The cheese dip tasted straight from a can. Overall though this place is amazing for the tacos. I highly suggest going here!

You have to speak/know some spanish when you come here. There was some lost translation when I ordered my food. I ended up getting a taco with potatoes in it. The food was "okay" at best.

The first thing you notice is that you are on the "south side" of town. This is known to be the area to come for good mex. The prices are good. $1.50 for tacos. $4.10 for burritos. Tasty Horchata not too sweet not too light. Coming from Mexican food in San Diego (the best Mex) this was just ok. It's been hard to find anything that compares to So Cal. The meat on my pollo burrito was very dry-w little taste. I got two asada tacos. Also both dry. The tortillas were great (best I've had in the city) as was the gaucamole (real avacado). Not too bad for the price but my search will go on.

I absolutely love this place in the southwest part of town. Any restaurant large enough to expand to three sections in a shopping complex must have something good going on. Their tacos are awesome, served in homemade corn tortillas with traditional cilantro, onion, and lime. Enchiladas are a favorite here, and their burritos are so legit too. You get so much value for your dollar, and it's fresh and legit Mexican food, not an Americanized version. Every meal is served with pickled carrots and peppers, and they bring salsa out in bottles for you to pour onto your tacos and burritos :) You will probably be the only non-Hispanic person when you go eat. This used to be my favorite place in OKC to eat with my friends, especially since this place just enables your late night munchies. Be aware that they charge a dollar extra if you pay with credit card- the sign on the register says it in Spanish but not English ;) When driving by, you might miss it. Look for the flashing haircut scissors, and it's the building right next to it.

Cheap dive with yummy enchiladas and agua fresca!

Been coming here for years...they're legit. Nothing fancy and VERY affordable. Their carne asada and barbacoa tacos are delicious! My daughter's fave is their carne asada tortas. Yo, even the Mexicans come here to eat...that should be proof enough! So take a trip to SW 29th & Kentucky and have the best tacos in the city...you won't be disappointed!

This is the second time I have been here and have not left disappointed yet. Fast and friendly service. This place isn't your average chain Mexican restaurants. You can tell it is family owned and they work hard to make their customers happy. I love the decorated walls and how they tell the history of the Mayans. You order your food at the counter and they have a good selection to choose from. Just FYI, hips and salsa are not complementary. They bring you a dish of jalapeños and pickled carrots and 2 very yummy sauces. I got 3 chicken enchiladas topped with sour cream, lettuce, tomato, cheese and I added avocado. Served with rice and beans. I really like the flavor of the tortillas and seasoning of the chicken. Rice and beans are GOOOOD. This dish is big and I was not able to finish it but have no fear my boyfriend made sure no food went to waste. My boyfriend for Carne Asada that can with onions and lettuce, tomato, jalapeños on the side. Served with rice and beans. Enjoyed this place and will be back.

This is by far the best authentic taqueria in Oklahoma City. The food is as good as the taqueria's in East Los Angeles.

Los Desvelados (The Sleepless) provides enough food to put you to sleep. Cheap, consistent.

I'm originally from a border town south of Texas and so far, all the tacos I've had are different. Though, these were my favorite. Tacos carne asada and al pastor would definitely be on my plate again.

If you love authentic Mexican food with a dive feel, this is your place! Tripe, tongue, pulled pork, etc... Tacos. I had a enchilada & carne asada corn taco. Excellent meal! No tea for the gringo's though!

Tried this place out cause everywhere was closed for a holiday! The neighborhood it's in is kind of sketchy, that's probably why not many people have reviewed it. I ordered a steak quesadilla, steak super burrito, a strawberry drink, and a melon drink. Me and a friend drank the drinks while waiting, the strawberry wasn't that good. Don't get it. The melon one was decent. Usually mexican places would have those drinks on point. While we were drinking, in my mind I was thinking "damn, I don't think this place is going to be good if they can't even get their drinks right" To my surprise, our food was actually good. The quesadilla wasn't that really filling, kind of thin and plain. But the super burrito... That thing was massive. I was not expecting them to bring out a burrito that big. I swear when I held it, It was like holding a little baby. The burrito was the as tall as a 2 liter bottle. It was huge and it was only 8$!!! The taste of it was pretty good, but that could've been because I was so hungry. I'd have to try it again for a more accurate review but for an 8$ burrito that size?! Thumb up. Just one thumb

This place is really good. They have a huge selection of food. The goat tacos are really good, lots of meat. The chips and salsa are good. The have some Mexican beer on hand. The staff is cool. They have lots of different dishes, something for everyone.

Reviewer Don W. called this place "slightly uncomfortably authentic," which is a perfect description. We were the only non-Spanish speakers in here, and the guy behind the counter spoke extremely limited English to the point where we were having trouble ordering. He was super nice and patient with us though! The chips and queso were AWESOME! The chips were freshly fried and I couldn't stop eating them. The tacos were also great, although I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, they seemed pretty authentic to me. Loved the pickled carrots and garlic on the side! Plus everything was ridiculously cheap. We got 3 tacos, a chimichonga, chips, queso, and two aguafrescas for under $15. So anyway, the true highlight here was the agua fresca!! I love cantaloupe agua fresca and it's SO hard to find up where I'm from, so I had to order it. BEST agua fresca I have ever had! It tasted like drinking a fresh piece of fruit and was thick, not overly watery like many agua frescas I have had. I'm still dreaming of that agua fresca...mmm....

Good authentic tacos! Got three different meats and while all tasty, couldn't really tell the difference in taste
(4)Carl J.
Very tasty, I had three tacos: asada, pollo, and lengua. For gringos, that's steak, chicken, and tongue (cow). All were good, but the tongue was a bit gamey for my tastes. I guess it could grow on me, I was trying to eat outside the box. Best part of the meal was that it was all fresh and clearly prepared when I ordered. I could hear them chopping the meat just like in Mexico. Also, fresh juicy limes (a key for good authentic tacos), good salsas, and a side of pickled veggies (favorite part!). And did I mention that 3 tacos and a medium pineapple drink was $9!!! That's a deal, even in OKC. I like, will return. As for the person who said this was "too authentic" and people were staring at him/her, just don't go back. Nobody stared at me, so it must have been your demeanor or dress. Plenty of Taco Bells and Del Tacos around if this place makes you uncomfortable.
(4)Don W.
Slightly uncomfortably authentic! That may sound like a negative statement, but it's really not. After reading strong reviews on here though, when I planned on checking it out, I didn't expect to be the ONLY gringo in the entire restaurant! That wouldn't be a big deal if everybody wasn't staring at me the whole time I waited. I like the copyright violating murals of Disney characters on the exterior. The place had tremendous selection and was very authentic. The chorizo was good, and I loved the attached smoothy/sweet shop that had Mexican frozen fruit popsicles for sale. I mistakenly tried the beef head, which was fatty and nasty, but that's probably my fault for choosing beef head! Overall, they were pretty good, but the wait was freakin ridiculous! I think it took about 20-30 minutes to get my tacos, and that whole time was spent with regulars staring at me and laughing while speaking Spanish to each other lol.
